Logitech Z-640 6 Speaker Surround Sound System Review

Logitech Z-640 6 Speaker Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using my previous Logitech 2.1 (satellite + sub) speakers for several years (and loving them!) I decided that for the price, these 640s would be worth the "risk" to gain 5.1 sound.
As usual, Logitech did a first class job on packaging the speakers. Everything arrived in great condition all protected in plastic bags to avoid any cosmetic flaws. Unpacking and set-up of the speakers was very easy -- all of the plug/cables are clearly marked and the cables are of reasonable length (important for the rear channels).
The performance of the speakers is good, especially considering the price range. They are a bit light on the midrange but for most computer applications (ie. games!) this is not an issue. The subwoofer is incredible -- I have to keep the sub set to minimum (there is a knob on the sub itself) since I live in a townhome with shared walls. I just popped a Techmaster P.E.B. audio CD in (a CD that is VERY heavy on the bass - commonly used in car audio competitions) and the sub does a wonderful job of reproducing the extremely low frequencies.
The high-range is good, as one would expect from satellites of this size.
All of the controls are positioned on the center channel speaker and include a Volume, Power, Fader, Center, and Matrix (for if you don't have a 5.1 soundcard) knob/button. The satellites stand on nice matte aluminum stands. The sub is probably around 10 inches cubed, with the speaker exposed on one side (behind a grille) and all of the connections on the opposite side. Cosmetically, these are nice speakers.
So, for the price, I cannot complain. Compared to my previous set of Logitech speakers (Soundman Extreme) and other speakers I have listened to, my only complaint is the midrange reproduction. Other than that, if you are a gamer or a basshead, these speakers will please you.
Mike

Get the most from your computer games and DVD movies with Logitech's Z-640 surround-sound speaker system. The system's four satellites (left/right, front/surround) and center-channel speaker fill your room with sound, while the 25-watt powered subwoofer rounds out the bottom end to a deep 35 Hz, a good octave below the range of most bookshelf speakers, delivering floor-shaking bass from your music or a DVD's low-frequency-effects channel, the ".1" in a Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1-channel presentation.
Inputs include a stereo analog (left/right) RCA pair and multi-channel analog inputs for decoded surround sound from any four- or six-channel sound card (or audio/video surround receiver).
The satellites are powered by 7.3 watts each, and the center channel, which handles up to 70 percent of most surround mixes, gets 16.3 watts. Logitech's innovative, dual-chamber subwoofer delivers twice the bass energy of similarly sized subwoofers, and the company's use of an internal power supply obviates the bulky wall adapters found on many surround systems.
All speakers are video shielded to allow distortion-free placement on or around your monitor, and the satellite speakers--imbued with easy-position rotating pedastals--may be mounted on stands, your desktop, or the wall. The system is covered by a two-year warranty. A handy supplied adapter ensures instant connectivity with gaming consoles.
What's in the Box Four satellite speakers, one center-channel speaker, one subwoofer, requisite speaker cabling, one adapter cable for hookup with video-game consoles, and a user's manual.

iGolf neo Pocketsize Golf GPS Review

Loved it, loved it, loved it ... I got my Neo Monday Night. Downloaded some courses that night and golfed with it Tuesday Night. Absolutely perfect for what I wanted. At $149 and a one time membership fee to download 100 courses (not an annual fee to keep it running) who could want more? Neo told me distances to front/center/back and that's all I needed. Checked the markings on the course and they were right on. It's best used when you're off in the rough, angled away from the fairway distances and need a distance from your "current line" of sight. Distances to the center of the green off any line was dead on. Any green I missed last night was because of my shot, not club selection. I really liked it ... and I liked it because I didn't spend $400+ on color pictures of stuff I don't need or use and I don't have to pay an annual fee to keep turning it on year after year!!! If you're a mid handicapper like me, can execute but just need accurate distances from anywhere (and not from dead center of the fairway), this is the tool. It's great. Next, I need to learn how to add points on the holes with water and sand and all that junk. I'm excited ... can you tell? Loved it!!!

Tired of feeling adrift on the course? Turn to the iGolf neo pocket-size GPS, a handy golf-course aid that automatically displays the distances to key points on any golf course in the world. The iGolf neo features such construction details as a 80 x 120 high-contrast LCD screen, a lightweight, compact housing, and a built-in SiRF Star III GPS receiver. Once you step on the course, however, form takes a backseat to function, as the neo displays the distance to the front, center, and back of the green, while also letting users add up to four custom points per hole. As a result, you can estimate whether you'll carry the water hazard with your 3-wood or whether you should lay up, and you'll have a better idea of when the sand traps come into play. Estimating your club strength is even easier when using the shot distance feature, which shows you how far you hit each club on average.
The iGolf neo holds up to 10 course files at once, and you can easily download other courses from iGolf.com when traveling beyond your home turf. It's also easy to map any course or add custom points yourself, should the downloaded info come up short. Best of all, you don't need to aim the neo or see the hole to receive accurate results. Simply choose the corresponding setting and you'll have all the info you need to pick the right club, swing with confidence, and enjoy the game more.
The iGolf neo is ready to use out of the box without requiring any additional software or hardware for custom mapping. However, you'll need a computer and Internet access if you'd like to download pre-mapped golf courses from iGolf.com (subscription required). The iGolf neo--which comes with a USB cable, software CD, and a belt clip--runs for up to 16 hours on its rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The unit itself measures 3.25 by 1.75 by 0.75 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 2.5 ounces.

HP Pavilion TX1320US 12.1" Entertainment Notebook PC (AMD Turion 64 Processor TL-60, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium Review

HP Pavilion TX1320US 12.1 Entertainment Notebook PC (AMD Turion 64 Processor TL-60, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium

This was an impulse buy for me when I was on vacation - and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Regarding the bloatware - I managed to delete everything using the Programs/Functions in the control panel and simply deleted the Online Services folder from the proper directory. I actually removed too much software and needed to re-install some of the HP programs that make the tablet buttons work (HP Quicklaunch Buttons and QuickPlay are all I needed). The touchscreen works well enough, though it lacks any pressure sensitivity - screen calibration was simple enough, though I had to do it a couple of times to get it just right.
Pros: Sleek and attractive machine. Good build quality with a strong swivel mechanism. Lid locks down nice and secure when in tablet and notebook form. Affordable and readily available at local stores with numerous rebates. Tons of features and benefits right out of the box - and impressive specs to match it (2.0GB RAM, Lightscribe DL DVD-R, 250GB HD, Biometric Scanner, Express card slot w/ media remote, built-in webcam, media card reader, wireless connectivity, etc.) Compact/Light size and weight - easy to take with you anywhere. I dig the trackpad design - I like the feel and texture of it (no dry, chalkboard feeling - easy to clean) This machine continues to put a smile on my face daily. Vista runs flawlessly on this puppy and I've decided that this baby is a keeper for me.
Cons: Bloatware as usual. Required some tweaking to get it just the way I wanted it (as with most Windows machines). Noticeable body flex from the plastic shell. Top heavy - as the screen portion is significantly heavier than the bottom keyboard shell (you'll notice it if you try and open the laptop with one hand). Runs hot after some use. Battery life is short (way too short). Screen glare could be a problem for some. No firewire port (though the 3 USB 2.0 provide plenty). Integrated graphics get the job done, but not exactly spectacular. Touchscreen lacks the accuracy and features of other models. As the previous review noted, HP support is less than stellar.
I'd strongly recommend someone in the market to give this a machine a try. Test it out, and if it doesn't suit you - you can always return it for something else. I purchased my unit from a CompUSA.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). The Basics
Processor: The 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Hard Drive: The 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive is more than double the average size for notebook PCs, and it offers a fasts 5400 RPM disk speed--an improvement over other notebooks with extra-large hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. The additional capacity helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).

Integrated Fingerprint Reader: A fingerprint reader offers advanced security by using fingerprints instead of standard passwords to access online accounts, such as banks and e-mail. To set up access, each fingerprint is associated with a password through Verisoft Access Manager. Verisoft Single Sign On (SSO) stores user names and passwords to an unlimited number of sites and automatically enters logon credentials. If more than one person uses the notebook PC, each can use a fingerprint to logon to a computer user account and access preset preferences and files.
Screen, Video & Audio The 12.1-inch LCD screen can swivel 180 degrees, providing optimal angles for viewing DVD movies and business presentations, and it folds flat for working in tight travel spaces such as airplanes or trains. It has a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. Video is powered by the integrated NVidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics/video card, which provides up to 559 MB of video memory shared with the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks. One of the headphone jacks is also compatible with SPDIF digital audio output for home theater surround sound.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with this notebook's integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).
With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. This notebook includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Cerwin-Vega E-712 12-Inch 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker, Black Ash (Single) Review

Cerwin-Vega E-712 12-Inch 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker, Black Ash (Single)
Average Reviews:

Remember when you could purchase REAL stereo speakers within a moderate price range that would not break the bank? Remember what it was like to listen to near audiophile quality speakers with the bass woofers built into them? Many an audio enthusiast will try to get that rich bass sound for their music by using small tiny satellite speakers and a separate sub. What they notice, like I did, is that there is always a slight delay or an out of tune quality between the sub and sats. The Cerwins have the bass woofers built right into them and therefore the woofers are tuned in time to match sonically with the mids and tweets in the speaker cabinets; something that ONLY the most expensive of separate sats and subs can do...In today's so called audio market, slim and bass-less tower speakers are all the rage and norm. You have to fork a few hundred to a thousand dollars more for that separate subwoofer----which most of today's subs will work for theatre digital applications but fall short for musical applications !...Cerwin Vega has always made affordable and reliable mid to hi-fi speakers. They fill that niche that no other audio speaker company cares to. With other name brands you either have an extreme limited choice between their bottom end cheap stuff or their esoteric and elite lines, but nothing in the middle for those on a budget to enjoy near audiophile high quality sound...
No need to fret my friends! In comes the Cerwin Vega E-712. The CV E-712 is one of the best audio speakers on the market (have been for a number of years with different model or badge-letter-numbers by Cerwin Vega such as HED or RE series). Their strength lies in that earth shattering bass producing woofer (you don't need a separate sub--period).The crisp high frequency tweeters are also something to marvel over. Some will claim that the tweeters on a CV speaker are too bright or sharp(that's what those handy-dandy black knobs on the speaker cabinet are for---to fine tune the sound and cut back or increase the highs and mids). You must remember that Cerwin Vegas were first widely used as dance club or DJing speakers.Their car audio line uses the same loud and sharp sounding principle to compensate for automotive engine-environment road noise. The real test is when these are used in a digital surround theatre set up ! The lows will make your stomach and chair rumble. The sound quality is colored and a tad exaggerated. This means that these are not warm or neutral sounding speakers like audiophile-grade speakers which tend to have a more subtle and bland sound for those used to crisp sharp highs and boomy bass. Mids are not accurate, but rather well produced.
The bottom line is that I'm glad I chose these speakers for their awesome sound quality which for me translates into a fun and hair raising experience from using with a turntable to listening to my favorite dvds !!! Does that behemoth Cerwin Vega speaker cabinet prove itself that it's not just for aesthetics? You better believe it! It serves it's HEAVY purpose/function extremely well...They are thickly insulated and constructed so well that you hear no speaker box resonances. I have pesonally seen the inside construction to these and even the cross over network is built pretty rugged---now that should be music to anyone's ears and earnings !

Play it loud and proud with Cerwin-Vega's E-712 three-way floorstanding loudspeaker. With its massive 12-inch woofer commanding house-rocking authority in the bass department and an amazing 98 dB sensitivity, you're guaranteed dynamic, full-range audio for your favorite music and movies.
The speaker uses three separate drivers optimized for specific frequency bands. In addition to the diecast aluminum cone woofer, the E-712 includes a lightweight, low-mass 5.25-inch midrange cone that renders smooth, clean vocals, and a balanced dome tweeter that offers high sensitivity with protection from thermal overloads. The drivers combine to produce an impressive 28 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and support amplifiers pumping up to 300 watts per channel.
The E-712 is sold as a single speaker, but excels in tandem with a second E-712 for stereo applications. Listeners can also team the speaker with other tonally matched Cerwin-Vegas to build a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 home theater setup. Add a powered subwoofer to the mix for the ".1" low-frequency effects and you're ready to rock, though the E-712's 28 Hz low-frequency rating delivers plenty of bass even without a subwoofer. As an added bonus, a complete surround sound system will add depth and clarity to such multichannel audio formats as SACD, DVD-Audio, and DTS-CD--none of which require a TV.
Additional features include front-panel acoustic contour controls that help optimize the E-712's output for specific tastes and listening environments; a multi-density cabinet that helps reduce audible distortion and improve tonal accuracy; and a tuned bass-reflex enclosure that produces a full 3 dB bass boost at the tuning frequency. Each E-712 measures 14.75 by 33 by 13.75 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a five-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box Single E-712 speaker, user's manual.

Apple iPod 30 GB White M8948LL/A (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL Review

Apple iPod 30 GB White M8948LL/A (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received a new iPod 30GB for Father's day (Thanks Sweetie!). I've used about a dozen or so prior mp3 devices, and I have noted some issues that haven't been represented in any other review, which I wanted to point out to folks considering buying an iPod.
First off, it's a great device overall. 30 GB is a lot of space and fits my 500+ CD music collection fine. I think the battery life of 8-10 hours is great (my previous device, the Nomad Jukebox, had 40GB, but got 2 hours battery life if I was lucky!) and I like it's looks and size a lot. There are some mildly annoying UI issues but nothing I can't live with. The case, and most importantly the screen, scratch really easily, so you have to be careful how you handle it (it's small enough to put in your pocket--just don't keep anything else in that pocket!).
I'm a Windows user, and I'll add my report that the MusicMatch software that ships with the iPod is disgraceful. I loaded it on three different computers, (moving the firewire card around each time) and it never would transfer music to the device. Finally I downloaded an *older* version of MMJB and got music to transfer. Its own user interface is awful and I really hate that it makes you IMPORT all of your music into ITS library. It's clearly designed for the novice user, with no expert-mode features that accommodate folks like me.
But the biggest criticism I have of the iPod is something that Apple just plain got wrong. There is no support for building [persistent] playlists on the device. This really bothers me. It's apparent that iPod's designers had a built-in assumption that people wouldn't mind being tethered to their computers for playlist management and other things, but not everyone works this way. I tend to not hook my device up to a computer unless I have new music to download, which can be weeks. I really want the device to be usable indefinitely without a computer.
But there's one important thing you can't do very well on the iPod without a computer: Create playlists. Yes, you can add songs and albums to the "on the go" playlist, but there are some serious flaws with that feature's implementation:
a) there is only one on-the-go playlist
b) this playlist is temporary. It is blown away the instant you dock your device (why, WHY? This is such a brain-dead design choice it boggles the mind.)
c) when adding entire albums to this playlist, the album order is not respected. They seem to go in either alpha or random order, I haven't figured it out yet.
This makes it tougher to use the device the way I want. I'd like to be able to string together either a list of individual songs or, more often, entire albums and listen to them. But the albums go into the playlist with the song order wrecked, which is annoying. And having to abandon a list I've already created to be able to create a new one is truly annoying. And it's heartbreaking that, after I've put together a really good mix on the device, it will be summarily discarded the instant I dock. I truly can't understand the rationale behind this one.
So on the whole, it's a good device, the best out there for its combination of size, capacity, and battery life. There are some annoying problems that might detract from your enjoyment a bit if you, like me, find album order important and like to create custom playlists anywhere you are. But even with those flaws I'm glad to own mine.
