Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone Review

Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone

I have used the ECMMS907 to fill about 150 mini discs since I bought it three years ago. It runs lovingly on one AA battery (unlike it's watch-battery-dependent predecessor) and allows for two polor patterns 180 and 90 degrees. The casing of the unit is rugged. It includes wind screen, travel pouch, stand clip, and four foot cloth encased cable. I have been able to record everything from street musicians to Dave Bruebeck concerts.
In pro audio it isn't considerd cool to like Sony gear as it often uses digital tricks to achieve a bogus sense of higher fidelity, but Sony electronics are bulletproof and work exactly as designed until you lose them or back them over with your car. That said...
Lots of people I have spoken with purchased this microphone thinking they could jack into the 1/8" input on thier laptop computer and get desirable results. This might work if your microphone is inches away from a blaring guitar amp, but won't do well with amient recordings or speaking as the output gain is far too low. Most people are not happy in this situation.
Overall, worth every penny. Perhaps there is a modification out there to improve the output gain.

The ECM-MS907 one-point stereo microphone was created for the advanced amateur to make instrumental recordings. Ideal for usage with MiniDisc Walkman and DAT portables, or any number of recorders on the market, the ECM-MS907 features a one-point stereo design, mid/side (MS) capsules with a switchable pickup angle, an Oxygen-free Copper (OFC) mic cable and a gold-plated stereo miniplug.

One-Point Stereo Design Enjoy full stereo recording with one small electret condenser mic. Perfect for live shows, single instruments, field recording, and anything else you want to point a mic at.
Mid/Side (MS) Switch This allows you to select the pickup angle between left and right channel--choose 90 degrees for a single voice or instrument, or 120 degrees to pick up many voices and instruments, arranged across the stage
OFC Cable and Gold-Plated Plug Both the Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) cable and the gold-plated plug provide maximum performance and minimum noise.
Ideal for Portable Digital Recorders With a wide dynamic range to complement digital recording systems, the ECM-MS907 is ideal for modern flash, DAT, MD, and other recording devices. It's L-shaped stereo mini-plug is standard on most.
Low-Profile Design The ECM-MS907 features an inconspicuous, compact design for easy portability, with a triangular shape that fits comfortably in the hand.
Mid/Side (MS) capsules The ECM-MS907 features mid/side capsules for natural stereo panorama. The Mid capsule picks up monophonic sound while the Side capsule picks up left/right difference sound--subtracting and adding the two capsule signals yields separate left and right channels (this permits electronic adjustment of pickup angle).

Jawbone ICON Series Rogue Bluetooth Headset Review

Jawbone ICON Series Rogue Bluetooth Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third bluetooth earpiece, after the Plantronics Voyager 510 and the Plantronics Voyager 855. For its primary function (phone calls) I would give it the edge over either of those earpieces because of the excellent reception and noise cancellation, but if you are strongly interested in using A2DP to listen to music or podcasts, then the Voyager 855 is very competitive.

- Appearance: The Jawbone Icon is tiny and light, and shows clear design influence. Even the frickin box is beautiful, and the whole thing is something you might expect to see at Target - clearly mass produced, but still distinctive and attractive instead of merely functional. This model is "The Rogue" - two shiny black squares, with subtle red undertones. There are five other models, each with its own color and pattern. After a few weeks in my pocket, there are a couple scratches on the finish, so you may want to carry yours in an altoids tin or something.

- Sound: Here is where the Icon wins. The reception is great, even when my phone is in my pocket, at least on the same side. With the phone in my opposite side pocket, it's occasionally choppy. The Icon also has the latest Jawbone "NoiseAssassin" technology - basically, a piece of the phone touches your cheek to help the phone figure out what noises are coming from you and what is external. It's not perfect, but it is *much* better than anything I've used before. I can walk through a windy parking lot or talk while my car radio is on, and the noise cancellation eliminates most of the external noise. Icon also has automatic volume leveling, which seems ok, although some calls are still a little loud.

- Connectivity/Software: The Icon charges and connects to a PC through a microusb port, which is nice, and has the capacity to download software from Jawbone's app store. It has voice responses "I'm on and ready to go" or "Call from 555-..." instead of beeps, and you can actually select the voice you prefer from the app store. There are some apps for iphone integration -- for example, one app works with an iphone app to display a headset battery meter on your iphone, and apps for software upgrades like A2DP.

- Controls: There is a single control button on the back of the earpiece and an on-off switch on the inside. This simplicity is consistent with Icon's slick design philosophy, but I would have liked some extra buttons for functions like volume.
- Fit: The fit is not perfect. If you look at the picture, you will see a soft circle at the back of the earpiece. That circle presses up against the back of your ear, and the front presses against the front. Because the earpiece does not actually sit in the ear canal (like the 855), it doesn't block out as much exterior sound, and unless one of the three included circles is a good fit for your ear size, the fit may not be perfect. Alternately, there are earloops included too. I like the ear circle when it fits, but I've had the medium fall out a few times, and the large seems a little too big.
- Other: The battery claims to have about a four hour charge, and the voice will tell you how much you have left when you push the button. I've left mine on overnight without much loss in charge, and it seems like I get at least a few hours from it, maybe four. Multipoint bluetooth connectivity is good - I connected this to a Blackberry Curve and Nokia Nuron with no trouble, although I haven't been able to get A2DP and multipoint to work simultaneously.

- A2DP: As I said, you can install A2DP from the Icon app store. This allows you to use the Icon to listen to podcasts or music on your phone, and to use voice to control some phone apps. (Of course, music through a bluetooth connection in one ear only is not a Bose-quality experience, but sometimes it's still nice to listen to tunes without people knowing it.) The sound is good, but I still think the Voyager 855 is better for A2DP - the 855 has extra controls that let you adjust volume more precisely and to skip tracks, and the 855 has a second earpiece that you can connect if you want to go full stereo. (Update 4/8/11 - my understanding is that Jawbone now ships these with A2DP standard, but you can still install it from their app store if you don't have it).

- Comparison: Currently, this unit is twice the price of the Voyager 510 and is at about the same price level as the 855. On the other hand, it's much lighter than the 510, and is better looking and has much better noise cancellation than both. Overall, I'm happy I have it, but IMHO, the choice is close enough to depend on your specific needs and budget.

Update October 28, 2010: five months later, I love this earpiece more than ever. The fit still isn't perfect, but I love how light it is. (Between 9-10 grams according to my kitchen scale). I also love its design sense, and while the A2DP also less than perfect, I have happily listened to about a hundred podcasts since getting this thing. On balance, it's far and away my favorite bluetooth earpiece to date.

Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception Review

Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM/FM Shortwave World Band Receiver with Single Side Band Reception
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am fairly new to SW radios. I bought a Grunding S350 and was annoyed with the drift . I would tune into a station and it would slowly tune out. I returned it and bought a Grunding YB400PE. It was much better that S350 but the SSB performance was dismal. Also I just could not lock on to some weak signals or to a station that was very close to a more powerful station.
I went in for the sony 7600GR and have been very happy. The synchronous detection helps a lot. You can select between LSB and USB when doing synchronous detection. This helps you with those pesky neighbouring stations. If it is on the Lower freq. choose USB and vice versa.
The audio quality is a little inferior to the YB400. It also does not have a handy snooze button. But I am yet to meet a person who buys SW radios for audio quality or as an alarm clock.
The YB400 comes with a AC mains power adapter but the sony does not. The Reel antenna is included in both.
If you are looking for a radio that can tune into weak signals ,provide SSB functionality , synchronous detection , variable attenuation to drown out noisy interference then this is the adio for you. A keeper.

NP-BG1 BATTERY + charger FOR SONY Cybershot DSC-W70 W100 Review

NP-BG1 BATTERY + charger FOR SONY Cybershot DSC-W70 W100
Average Reviews:

Lost the battery charger somewhere in Chicago that came with my DSC-N1. Since I did not want to pay crazy high prices for official Sony swag, I went this route. Some people complain the battery does not fit in the charger quite right, but we had no problems there. The bottom line is that this is a crazy deal for a battery AND a charger and you would be nuts to give it a bad review if it works. AND IT WORKS. Charges the Sony battery just fine too.

Samsung A177 Unlocked QuadBand Phone with QWERTY Keyboard and Camera - US Warranty - Black Review

Samsung A177 Unlocked QuadBand Phone with QWERTY Keyboard and Camera - US Warranty - Black
Average Reviews:

The husband and I are no longer under contract, and did not want to get back into one just to get an affordable phone with the features he needs. An unlocked cell phone seemed to fit our requirements, but I was skeptical. However, based on the prior reviews, and on other information I found on the web about this particular phone, I decided to try it. The vendor confirmed that this model would work with the T-Mobile SIM card. Sure enough, it does! Sound quality is really good, and it has pretty much every feature you'd find in similar phones (the Blackberry Curve comes to mind). Calendar, messaging, web capable, this phone is a virtual office in the palm of his hand.
The phone is also aesthetically pleasing and distinctive. So far, the hubby is extremely pleased with it - and that's saying something.
If you need a quality phone, but don't want to be slave to a cell contract, or shell out hundreds of dollars, seriously consider this one. The price is right, and the phone, at least for us, was even better.

Weiman Leather Wipes 30 ea Review

Weiman Leather Wipes 30 ea
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These work great. They really rejuvenate older leather and make it look like new. There are a couple of things to keep in mind though.
First, one small wipe contains a lot of cleanser and it will tend to saturate whatever you are cleaning. I recommend having a number of leather items handy to clean so as to not waste the cloth or over saturate the item you are cleaning. For example, with one wipe I was able to clean one big and tall XXL leather men's jacket, a briefcase, an iPad case and an iPod case. I used a second wipe to clean the four leather seats in my SUV and some leather trim. One cloth goes a long way!
Second, it is best to allow some time for the item you cleaned to sit awhile before using it. Around 24 hours is what I have found. If you are using it on leather car seats or a couch it takes awhile to dry and the smell (although citrus) is a little strong.
Third, as with all wipes, they will eventually dry out if not used. I have been fine up to 2.5 years and if you can't make it through a full container in that time period, you might end up with some wasted dried out product.

Callpod Chargepod Bundle Pack with 6 Adapters (Silver) Review

Callpod Chargepod Bundle Pack with 6 Adapters (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Chargepod bundle pack after reading a good review of it in a computer magazine. Our household has around 5 different mobile devices which need recharging at one time or another. The area where we keep all the charging cables was beginning to look really cluttered. Plus, we were fighting over shared charging cables (e.g. for two blackberries).
This neat little system really cleaned things up. Now we have one cable instead of a bunch, and the unit itself is quite attractive, with blue LED lights softly glowing. Although it has a travel case, I don't think I will bring it on travel. It comes with a set of tips for different devices. The only downside is that I still had to go and buy a couple of tips separately, at around $10 each. This can add up over time, but I have the same problem with my iGo travel charger and don't see any way around it. Overall a clever solution to clean up clutter.
